Thomas and Son Farms History

The Thomas family moved into the Boonsboro, Maryland area in the mid 1800’s.  It all started with a man named Solomon Thomas, who began his life as a farmer on the very farm that Thomas and Son Farms resides on today.  Three generations later, Donald E. Thomas was born.  Continuing his family heritage, Donald took over the farm, dairy cattle, and swine.

Donald was the father of four daughters and one son, Tracy.  As Tracy grew older, he and his father began to expand their careers into various fields.  This is how the excavating company came about.  As the excavating company expanded, there became less and less time to spend raising and milking dairy cattle.

In 1988, Donald and Tracy sold the remaining dairy herd and swine and ventured into the commercial beef industry.  This enabled them to make the most use of the farm without the farm and cattle requiring too much time.  Beginning with a herd of crossbred cattle, they bought a young Limousin bull to breed.

While maintaining Limousin bulls for much of the herd, Donald and Tracy also ventured to try some other breeds of bulls, including Chianina, Piedmontese, and Angus-cross.  Tried and tested, the Thomas’ went back to a solid Limousin bull battery.  Finding that the Limousin bulls gave them the muscle, growth, and efficiency they were looking for in their beef cattle.

Tracy has three sons, Christopher, Daniel, and Lonnie.  As his sons grew older, they began to develop an interest in the beef cattle and began showing through 4-H at their county fair in 1998.  Over the years, the three boys developed a passion for the Limousin and bought their first registered purebred Limousin heifers at the West Virginia Beef Expo in the spring of 2002.  Since, they have expanded their herd to approximately 150 brood cows and maintain between 200 and 300 head of cattle at the farm most of the time.  The Thomas’ maintain many of any buyers’ needs with a wide variety of cattle for sale at all times at the farm, including open and bred heifers, bulls, feeders, and finished steers.

The Thomas’ work to maintain a highly efficient herd of cattle with strong physical and genetic attributes. Raising much of their own feed, hay, and pastures, enables them to monitor closely the rationing and the quality of the feed and hay the cattle take in.  Also, the Thomas family has achieved a high degree of efficiency and growth in their herd of cattle without any use of growth hormones, and the cattle are only treated when absolutely necessary to insure their health.

With a strong effort from the entire family, the Thomas’ will maintain high quality cattle and a very efficient and dependable excavating company.  Thomas and Son Farms is a family owned and operated operation that is dedicated to customer satisfaction.  They guarantee their work and their cattle to meet the standards of the customer.
